The Võrtsjärve Learning Centre of the Estonian University of Life Sciences has grown out of the Centre for Limnology. The former aquarium rooms of the Centre for Limnology, which had been used as storage space, were renovated and furnished between 2002 and 2006 at the initiative of the Võrtsjärve Foundation, and turned into a lake museum. The results were so good that the Rector of the Estonian University of Life Sciences at the time, Alar Karis, formed a new structural unit with his order of 25 October 2006 – the Võrtsjärve Learning Centre of the Estonian University of Life Sciences.
The mission of the EULS Võrtsjärve Learning Centre is to raise general environmental awareness and to reinforce an eco-friendly, sustainable lifestyle as one of the values held by the people in Estonia.
The Kalala Lake Museum is the part of the Võrtsjärve Learning Centre that is open to visitors. Instead of traditional museum articles in glass cases, our main attraction is live freshwater fish found in Estonia. Indoors we have different species on display in 15 fish tanks; in addition, the fish have spacious outdoor tanks at their disposal during the warmer season.
We carry out various natural science programmes and courses for pupils and adults.
